John Mark Dutton

John Mark Dutton

Jasper, Alabama

I was born in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1968 and raised in Walker County, where I have lived my entire life. My mother. Johnnie Jones Dutton, was born and raised in Cordova, Alabama, where she remained until she and my father married. Mother retired as a fourth grade school teacher from Curry Elementary School in Walker County. My father, John W. Dutton, who has now passed from this world, was from the Curry area and, except for the time he served his country while in the United States Army, remained there his entire life.

When I became school age, I was enrolled by my parents at Curry Elementary School and later, attended Curry High School, where I received an advanced academic diploma in 1986. After finishing high school, I accepted an academic scholarship to Faulkner University in Montgomery where I attended for two years and eventually transferred to Athens State College, where I received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1990.

In 1986, while attending Faulkner University, I met my soon-to-be Wife, Lydia, who was originally from the rural farming community of McKenzie, Alabama. She and I married in 1988 and we have lived together in Walker County since that time. Lydia also graduated from Athens State University in 1990 and eventually -. went to work as a school teacher for the Walker County Schools system, where she remains employed today.

After finishing college, I accepted a position at the Walker County Center of Technology, where I worked as an instructor for sixteen years. During that time, I also taught night classes at Bevill State Community College and helped to write the state curriculum for metals technology.

In 2001, I began attending law school at the Birmingham School Of Law, where I graduated and passed the Bar exam in 2004. While attending law school, I continued to work a full time job, which made me particularly proud of this accomplishment. In the spring of 2004, I was awarded the BSL Trial Advocacy Award.

I began practicing law in the fall of 2004 and opened my own firm in downtown Jasper, Alabama, in January, 2006. On April 27th, 2011, my downtown office was destroyed by one of the many tornadoes which ravaged the county on that day. Shortly after picking through what was left of my office, I began working with attorney Greg Ellis, who was kind enough to offer me space in his office until I could recover from the damage. Not taking long to figure out we worked well together we soon formed, Dutton & Ellis, LLC. In the late fall of 2011, we moved into the historic, and newly renovated Burton Building, where our offices are located today.

Although I consider myself a general practitioner of the law, I primarily focus on family law, personal injury, criminal law and probate law. I have worked tirelessly over the years to represent the legal needs of the citizens of Walker and surrounding counties and we have won judgments in our client's favor in everything from child custody matters to murder defenses. It is my hope and goal to continue to successfully represent the citizens of this area for many years to come.
